Q: What is your background in hair and makeup artistry, and what led you to launch Pretty Weird Beauty?
A: I started my bridal hair and makeup career when I worked in a salon as a bridal hair stylist and wedding day coordinator in 2012. While working as a salon coordinator I built the skills necessary to run the back end of the business. After working in the salon, I realized that my passion was truly event styling, so I transitioned to working for a larger bridal company. I quickly discovered that the alternative bride was extremely underrepresented in my area and I knew I needed to do something about it!
I wanted to create a brand that I would personally be drawn to if I was a bride, and that is when Pretty Weird Beauty was born! Though there were other companies that catered to the off-beat bride, there were no hair and makeup companies that showcased brides that didn’t fit in the cookie-cutter industry of beauty. Pretty Weird Beauty became a place for all brides, but most importantly, brides that felt like they may not be the ideal clientele for the surrounding vendors.
Q: Give us a peek into what a day in the life of a hair and makeup artist looks like! Are you going to meetings and consultations, working with clients and marketing yourself?
A: Aside from hair and makeup artistry I am also a full-time eye lash technician, so in March of 2016 I opened my own studio where I could meet with both my brides and my lash clients. A normal day for me starts with lots of caffeine! I typically have a very blended day of both bridal consultations as well as meeting with my brides and clients for their lash maintenance. I do not outsource any part of my business such as book keeping or marketing, so in between clients I am responding to emails, planning my social media posts and restocking products to keep the business running smoothly.
Q: When it comes to choosing a hair and makeup artist for your wedding, we know that brides want to work with the best of the best. What are your top tips for brides looking to hire a hair and makeup artist?
A: My best tip when booking your beauty vendors is to not waste time securing your dream artist. I am personally located in an area that has a huge bridal presence, so the vendors tend to book extremely fast! When you find the artist that you know can give you exactly the look you are hoping for, do not wait to get your name on their books.
Be prepared when reaching out to the artist and have all your details organized such as the number of attendants receiving services, the location of your wedding and the time of your ceremony. This will help your artist configure how much time is needed to complete the requested services.
Another great tip is to ask your friends about their experiences with their beauty vendors! Most of my brides find me through their friends. You want an artist that can create beautiful hair and makeup looks, but also someone who is fun to be around – the last thing you need on your wedding day is someone that doesn’t vibe with you!
Q: Which wedding hair and makeup trends do you foresee being popular in 2018? What are some beauty trends that we can expect to say goodbye to?
A: One major trend I see continuing to make a huge come up is braids! They have been slowly becoming more popular since 2015, but I honestly I don’t see them going anywhere. Today’s braids are turning more into art and I’m lovin’ every second of it! They can be pulled apart and given texture to create the perfect undone look, but with the ability to last all day and night.
Though I love a good ole classic bun, I’m noticing a lot less clients requesting tight and slick hair styles. There is always a time and a place for an Audrey Hepburn-inspired look, but I don’t imagine I will be seeing much of that in 2018.
Q: For brides who are nervous about looking and feeling their best on their big day, what is your #1 beauty tip?
A: My best tip for the wedding day is to DRINK WATER! Not only will water give you natural energy to handle all the things on the wedding day, but it will leave your skin feeling refreshed. One of the most important things to keep in mind leading up to the wedding is to stay hydrated. Another amazing tip is to not allow yourself to feel pressured into wearing a look that is not YOU! It can be so easy to fall into the rabbit hole of Pinterest, but it’s so important that you recognize yourself when you look in the mirror.
